Free Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Courses to Start; Goals are to Save Lives, Address Lifeguard Shortage
ORLANDO, FL (September 30, 2024) – The Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center (RAFC) is now hosting a series of Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification courses at no cost to participants. The courses are offered through the Every Child A Swimmer-Orange County program (ECAS-OC), an initiative of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. ECAS-OC aims to increase access to water safety resources, including free swimming lessons and water safety-related certifications for underserved communities.
Drowning prevention is a critical issue. With the number of drownings on the rise, the need for qualified lifeguards and water safety instructors is more urgent than ever. According to the American Lifeguard Association, part of the reason for the shortage is that lifeguarding is not considered an essential job by many and is instead viewed as a summer job.
“By providing free training, we’re empowering individuals to not only have lifesaving skills but the opportunity for employment opportunities. Truly making a difference in their lives and the people around them,” says Mike Miller, executive director of the RAFC. “We are grateful to the Florida Department of Health in Orange County for choosing RAFC to host these life-saving certification courses.”
